Introducing CommandH: Hide That Last App

October 21, 2026 · Matt Senter

Charcoal Command and H keys with an orange accent, in front of a fading app window.

I use Cmd+H to clear my screen. But on macOS, the last visible app refuses to hide. One window left, one more keystroke, and… nothing.

So I built CommandH. It’s a tiny menu bar app that makes Cmd+H work on that last app, too. You can hide the app completely or choose Show Desktop, which slides the windows aside and brings them back with another Cmd+H.

It’s free and open source under the MIT license. No Accessibility or Screen Recording permissions, no network requests, no data collected. Just a small fix that lets me get to my desktop.

CommandH runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later. For now, installation means building from source; the GitHub README walks you through the script.
